Screw Pile Foundations...Each project has unique factors that determine the most acceptable foundation system. The following text summarizes the situations where screw anchors become a sensible solution.
Projects requiring deep foundations due to poor subsurface soil... Screw piles are designed as deep-end bearing piles which transfer loads to competent, load bearing strata. Advantages over other deep foundation systems: It eliminates high mobilization costs associated with driven piles, drilled shafts, or auger-cast piles. Screw piles don't require spoils to be removed and for flowable sands, soft clays, and organic soils, no casings are required, unlike drilled shafts or caissons.
*Flooded and/or poor surface conditions...lnstallation only requires a mini excavator.
*Limited access...Can be installed with hand held installers. *Expansive soils...Surfaces vary but typical depth is 10'. Active portion of screw anchors are well below this. Only the shaft is affected by the expansive soils. Since screw anchors have much smaller shafts than driven piles or auger-cast piles, the uplift forces on the anchors are much smaller.
*Bad weather installation...Can be installed in any weather.
*Contaminated Soils...No spoils need to be removed.
*Temporary Structures...Removal is simple, just reverse the installation process.
Screw anchors can be installed in interior spaces with hand held installers, and unlike driven piles are vibration-free. Auger -Cast piles disturb the soil, undermining existing foundations, screw anchors do no disturb existing conditions.
